Roughly 70 percent of the sodium in a typical diet arrives inside packaged and restaurant food, already added before you touch it. The Shaker Is Not the Problem

Sodium in a typical diet breaks down roughly like this.

About 70 percent comes from packaged foods and restaurant meals, added during manufacturing or preparation.

Around 5 percent gets added at the table.

Around 6 percent gets added while cooking at home.

The remaining 15 percent or so occurs naturally in foods like milk, meat and vegetables.

That distribution explains why so many people cut back on salt and see no change in their readings. The shaker was never the main source.

Salty Six: Where It Hides

The American Heart Association named six categories that contribute most sodium to the US diet. Several are not obviously salty at all.

Breads and rolls. Around 150 mg per slice. Not particularly salty per serving, and people eat several servings a day, which puts bread at the top of the list.

Pizza. One slice can carry 600 to 800 mg. Two slices approach a full day's limit.

Sandwiches. Bread plus deli meat plus cheese plus condiments stacks four sodium sources into one meal.

Cold cuts and cured meats. Around 500 mg per two ounce serving. Curing is a salt process by definition.

Soups. A cup of canned soup often carries 700 mg or more, and most cans hold two servings.

Burritos and tacos. Tortilla, seasoned meat, cheese and sauce all contribute.

Chips and pretzels taste saltiest and contribute less than any of these, because the sodium is on the surface where your tongue meets it. Sodium baked into bread is invisible to taste and still counts.

Two things follow from that table.

The average is roughly 50 percent over the limit. This is not a fringe problem.

A teaspoon sounds like plenty until you realise you are not the one adding it. Most of your daily allowance is spent before you sit down.

People with high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart failure or diabetes are often advised to aim closer to 1,500 mg. Follow the target your doctor sets rather than a general figure.

Why Sodium Raises Blood Pressure

The mechanism is straightforward.

Sodium pulls water with it. More sodium in your bloodstream means more fluid volume, and more volume in a fixed space means higher pressure against the vessel walls.

Your kidneys handle the excess by excreting it, which works well until the load is consistently high. Over years the pressure stays elevated, and sustained high pressure damages arteries, the heart, the kidneys and the eyes.

Not everyone responds the same. Roughly a quarter to half of people are salt sensitive, meaning their blood pressure moves noticeably with intake. Salt sensitivity is more common with age, in people with existing hypertension, and in some populations more than others.

You cannot easily tell which group you belong to without trying a reduction and measuring.

Potassium Is the Other Half

Sodium gets the attention and the ratio matters as much as the absolute number.

Potassium helps your kidneys excrete sodium and relaxes blood vessel walls. Most people eat too much sodium and too little potassium, which compounds the problem from both ends.

Adults need around 2,600 to 3,400 mg of potassium daily and most fall well short.

One important exception. Anyone with chronic kidney disease often needs potassium restricted rather than increased, since damaged kidneys cannot clear it. Salt substitutes based on potassium chloride are unsafe for that group and for people on certain blood pressure medications. Ask your doctor before using one.

Swaps That Actually Move the Number

Ordered roughly by impact.

Cook more meals at home. A restaurant meal averages well over 1,000 mg. Two swaps a week saves roughly 340 mg a day.

Buy low sodium versions of the big five. Bread, canned soup, deli meat, cheese and canned beans all come in reduced sodium versions. Switching those alone can cut 800 mg or more.

Rinse canned beans and vegetables. Draining and rinsing removes roughly 40 percent of the sodium.

Check the label rather than the taste. Look at milligrams per serving and the serving size, since a can of soup is usually two servings rather than one.

Use acid and aromatics instead of salt. Lemon, vinegar, garlic, herbs and chilli all make food taste more seasoned without sodium.

Give it three weeks. Salt taste preference genuinely adapts. Food that tastes bland at first tastes normal after a few weeks, and heavily salted food starts tasting excessive.

What About Salt Substitutes

Potassium chloride based substitutes replace some sodium with potassium and can work well for some people.

They also carry real risk. Anyone with kidney disease, anyone taking ACE inhibitors, ARBs or potassium sparing diuretics, and anyone with certain heart conditions can develop dangerously high blood potassium.
