Predictions assume you have trained specifically for that distance. Without the long runs behind you, a marathon prediction from a 5K will overshoot considerably.
Training paces from this result

Knowing your pace is the easy part. Most people lose years of progress because they do not know what to run on the days they are not racing. This running pace calculator gives you the splits for race day and the four training paces underneath them, including the easy pace that should feel almost embarrassingly slow.
Below the tool you get how race predictions actually work, why negative splits beat even ones, and the mistake that keeps most runners flat.
Pace, Speed and the Two Units
Pace is time per distance. Speed is distance per time. Runners think in pace, cyclists and treadmills think in speed, and the calculator shows both.
A 10K in 50 minutes works out at 5:00 per kilometre, 8:03 per mile, or 12.0 km/h.
The conversion between kilometre and mile pace trips people up constantly. One mile is 1.60934 kilometres, so mile pace is always the larger number. A 5:00/km pace is 8:03/mi, not something close to 5:00.
What a Pace Band Is For
Racing by feel works until it does not. Somewhere around two thirds distance, effort and pace stop matching, and by then a fast start has already been spent.
A pace band is the cumulative time you should see on your watch at each marker. Runners write them on their arms or wear printed bands for exactly this reason.
The calculator produces one for your target time. Glance at it at each marker and you know within a second whether you are on plan, which removes the guessing entirely.
Even Splits or Negative Splits
The tool offers both and one of them is better.
Even splits mean running each kilometre at the same pace.
Negative splits mean running the second half faster than the first. The calculator sets the first half about 2 percent slower and the second about 2 percent faster.
Why negative works. Nearly every distance world record has been run this way, and most personal bests follow the same shape. A slightly conservative start preserves the glycogen and the legs you need late, and passing people in the final third is far easier than watching others pass you.
Why people fail at it. Adrenaline, fresh legs and a crowded start line make the first kilometre feel effortless. Runners bank time they believe they will keep, then pay it back with interest.
A negative split feels wrong for the first ten minutes and right for the last twenty.
How Race Predictions Work
The tool uses the Riegel formula, published by Pete Riegel in 1977.
T2 = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)^1.06
Your time at one distance, scaled by the ratio of distances raised to 1.06. The exponent above 1 accounts for pace slowing as distance grows.
A 50 minute 10K predicts roughly 23:59 for 5K, 1:50:19 for a half marathon and 3:50:01 for a marathon.
The caveat that matters more than the formula. Riegel assumes equivalent training for both distances. Someone with a sharp 5K and no long runs will not run the predicted marathon. The gap widens the further you extrapolate.
Read it this way. Predictions between neighbouring distances are reasonably reliable. A 5K to marathon prediction tells you what is possible with marathon specific training behind you, not what you could run next weekend.
The formula also assumes flat courses and reasonable conditions. Heat, hills, wind and altitude all cost time the maths cannot see.
The Training Pace Mistake
This section is the reason the tool exists.
From a 50 minute 10K, the four training paces come out roughly like this.

Look at the gap between easy pace and race pace. Over a minute per kilometre.
Most runners cannot make themselves run that slowly. Easy days become moderate days, moderate days become hard days, and every run lands in the same middling zone. Coaches call it the grey zone and it produces steady fatigue with very little adaptation.
Why easy has to be easy. Aerobic base builds through high volume at low intensity. That adaptation needs time on feet without accumulating fatigue, and running easy days at moderate pace prevents both the volume and the recovery.
The polarised approach. Endurance research and elite practice both point the same way. Roughly 80 percent of training genuinely easy, 20 percent genuinely hard, and very little in between.
The practical test. You should be able to hold a full conversation in complete sentences on an easy run. Anyone who cannot is running too fast, regardless of what the watch says.

What Changes Your Real Pace
Formulas assume ideal conditions. Reality does not cooperate.
Heat. Performance drops noticeably above about 15 degrees Celsius, and the effect compounds with humidity. Another 20 to 30 seconds per kilometre on a hot day is realistic.
Hills. Uphill costs more than downhill returns. A hilly course is slower than a flat one of the same distance, every time.
Wind. A headwind costs more than an equal tailwind gives back, since drag rises with the square of speed.
Altitude. Above roughly 1,500 metres, oxygen availability drops and so does pace.
Sleep and fuelling. A bad night or an empty stomach shows up in the legs directly.
Adjust expectations rather than forcing the pace. A planned pace in conditions that do not support it is how races fall apart.
How to Build Toward a Target
A few practical points.
Increase weekly volume gradually. Around 10 percent per week is the common guideline, and it is a guideline rather than a law. Consistency matters more than the exact figure.
Keep one long run a week. The long run drives most of the endurance adaptation for distances above 10K.
Add one quality session, then a second. Tempo first, intervals later. Two hard sessions a week is enough for most recreational runners.
Take rest seriously. Adaptation happens during recovery, not during the session.
Race less than you train. Every race costs recovery time. Two or three target races a year works better than racing monthly.
Practise your race pace. Some kilometres at target pace during long runs teach you what it feels like, which matters when adrenaline distorts your judgement on the day.

Divide your total time by the distance. A 50 minute 10K is 3,000 seconds divided by 10, which gives 300 seconds or 5:00 per kilometre.

Depends entirely on age, experience and distance. A common recreational range is 6:00 to 7:00 per kilometre for a 10K, and comparing yourself to your own previous times is more useful than comparing to strangers.
