Every one of them shares the same blind spot. Height and weight cannot reveal body composition, so a lifter and a sedentary person of identical size receive identical answers. The formulas assume an average amount of muscle, and anyone far from average gets a poor estimate.

FFMI, the Number That Beats BMI for Lifters
Fat free mass index applies the BMI idea to lean mass instead of total weight. Divide your lean mass in kilos by your height in metres squared, and the result tells you how much muscle you carry for your frame.
The difference this makes is easy to see. Two men of 5 feet 10 inches both weigh 190 pounds, so BMI calls both of them overweight at 27.3. The first carries 12 percent body fat and an FFMI of 24. The second carries 30 percent and an FFMI of 19. BMI cannot tell them apart. FFMI puts one near the top of the natural range and the other in the middle of the pack.
FFMI also changes slowly, which makes it a better progress marker than weight. Muscle arrives at a pace measured in months, so a rise of one point over a year is a real result.
Normalized FFMI and Why Height Needs a Correction
Raw FFMI carries a quiet bias. Taller people tend to score lower and shorter people higher, because muscle mass does not scale perfectly with the square of height.
Normalized FFMI corrects for that by adjusting every result to a reference height of 1.8 metres, which is 5 feet 11 inches. The adjustment adds 6.1 points for each metre of height below that reference and subtracts the same for anyone taller.

Most untrained adult men sit between 17 and 19. A year of consistent lifting with enough protein usually adds one to two points, and the second year adds far less. That slowdown is normal rather than a sign anything is wrong.
The Natural Ceiling Debate
The most quoted figure in this whole field comes from a 1995 study that compared fat free mass index in users and nonusers of anabolic steroids. Almost none of the drug free lifters in that sample passed a normalized FFMI of 25, while many steroid users sat well above it.
That single number became internet shorthand for a hard biological limit, and it deserves more care than that. The sample was small, it drew on gym goers from one era, and body fat in the study came from methods with their own margin of error. Later work has found drug free lifters above 25, particularly very tall or very heavily built men.
Treat 25 as a soft ceiling rather than a rule. A natural 23 or 24 already takes years of serious training and favourable genetics, so a home calculator returning 27 usually means the body fat figure feeding it was too low rather than anything else.
Why Lean Mass Matters Beyond the Gym
Muscle does far more than fill a shirt, and four of its jobs have nothing to do with appearance.
It sets most of your metabolic rate. Lean tissue burns energy at rest while fat tissue barely does, which is why two people of the same weight can have resting burns that differ by hundreds of calories.
It stores glucose. Muscle is the largest sink for blood sugar in the body. More muscle means better blood sugar control, independent of body fat.
It protects independence in later life. Muscle loss with age, known as sarcopenia, is what eventually stops older adults climbing stairs and rising from chairs unaided. How to Build Lean Mass
Four things drive muscle gain, and no supplement substitutes for any of them.
Train against resistance twice a week or more. Cover the major muscle groups, take most sets close to the point where form breaks down, and add weight or repetitions over time. Progression is the signal that builds muscle, not the exercise itself.

How to Keep Lean Mass While Losing Fat
Weight loss always costs some lean mass. The goal is to keep that share small, and three habits do most of the work.

Limits of These Estimates
Every figure on this page is an estimate, and the size of the error depends on what you fed in.
Formula only results carry the widest margin, because height and weight cannot see muscle. Results built on a tape measured body fat percentage improve considerably, though tape methods still run a few percentage points either way. Only a DEXA scan or hydrostatic weighing settles the question properly.
Body water also moves the number. A heavy salt day, a hard training session or the menstrual cycle can shift measured lean mass by a pound or two without any real change.
Measure the same way every time and judge trends over months. The direction of travel is reliable even when the absolute figure is not.
Who Should Not Use This Lean Body Mass Calculator
Several groups get results that mislead rather than inform.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Body water and composition both shift in ways these equations cannot follow.
Children and teenagers under 18. Researchers built the equations on adults, and growth changes the relationship between height and lean mass.
People with significant fluid retention. Heart failure, kidney disease and liver disease all inflate measured lean mass.
Adults at the extremes of body weight. The formulas drift badly at both ends of the range.
